First SoapBox artists announced for Folk East

It is with great pleasure we announce the first group of artists to be booked on the SoapBox stage at Folk East. We may be the smallest stage onsite but we pack a big punch, just like the fantastic artists we have asked to come play with us.

We are also pleased to be holding ‘Words & Verses’ everyday at 7pm on the SoapBox stage. That’s a massive 1 ½ hours of spoken word, comedy, story telling and more, from some of our favourite wordsmiths. Expect literary linguistics, side-splitting giggles and words to feed your heart, soul and mind.

A new addition to the festival will be the ‘SoapBox Introducing’ hour held everyday at 4pm, bringing the brightest young folk & acoustic musicians to the Festival. Come see the future stars of folk! If you are a wicked musician and under 21 (or want to tell me about someone who is) please get in touch amy@getonthesoapbox.co.uk

Words & Verses Recordings

As you may have heard we started recording all the Words & Verses spoken word open mic nights, held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at The Spread Eagle, with a great many thanks to The Decibel Kid our friendly neighbourhood beat maker.

The first poet to take the stage during the open mic was the excellent Jonathon Marriott. Better known as an alternative acoustic musician he only decided that morning to read his lyrics as poems!

It was his first time on stage as a Poet and we think he was wonderful. Its really special to get the space to listen to a songwriters lyrics, sometimes I struggle at gigs so this was very enjoyable for me. I hope you like it too.

Here is the title track from his debut EP performed as a poem.

Leanne Moden at Words & Verses

The Fenlend Poet Laureate Leanne Moden popped by to Words & Verses to read for us. This wickedly funny wordsmith has been a Box favourite for a long time and it was an absolute pleasure to welcome her back. Find out more about Leanne here www.tenyearstime.blogspot.co.uk

Words & Verses is a free entry spoken word open mic, held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at The Spread Eagle in Ipswich. All forms of spoken word are welcome from covers to originals, poetry to rap. This is a night dedicated to the love of the WORD.

Please note this poem deals with some adult issues so may not be suitable for everyone. Personally I love it for that exact reason. x

Scroobius Pip & The Edinburgh Fringe

Big Marvellous News from the Box. One of our longest SoapBox-ers Scroobius Pip is taking his first show to Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year! Congratulations Pip.

Im so very chuffed he is taking poetry to big stages. He poems have long been a part of my life and though they may be dark, he is really quite a funny chap. The last gig he did he opened with the theme from Duck Tails, yes, really. Always has me in fits of laughter at his gigs. I saw him perform 8 times last year and Im still very engaged and entertained by him. Good luck Pip. See you in Edinburgh! xxx

P.s. Pip first performed at Getonthe SoapBox Events in 2006 and I have been a lifelong fan ever since. Once you see him live you will be too. DO IT xxxx
